WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning against Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday, but left the bases loaded as the game ended with OBU earning a 14-13 victory at the SWOSU Athletic Complex.
Each team's offense had the upper hand early, with OBU scoring three runs in the first before SWOSU scored two in the bottom of the first and tied it up at 3-3 in the second with an RBI double from
Alex Pimentel. The bats really took center stage in the third inning, with the Bison using seven hits to put seven runs on the board before SWOSU answered with five runs on three hits, including a two-run single from
Kannon McCune and an RBI double by
Rafael Villela.
OBU extended their lead to 14-8 with four runs in the top of the fifth, but SWOSU kept the Bison off the scoreboard for the final four innings and began to cut away at the deficit. The Dawgs loaded the bases for
Robert Perea in the sixth and he came through with a bases-clearing double down the left field line, which made it 14-11, where the score would stay until the bottom of the ninth.
A scary moment for the home team occurred in the top of the ninth as SWOSU catcher
Robert Perea and third baseman
Tyler Benge collided while going for a foul ball. While Benge made the catch to record the out on the play, he took the worst of the collision and was tended to on the field before being transported from the field for further medical care.
SWOSU rallied for their injured teammate and loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, pushing runs across on a bases-loaded walk issued to
Brady Burtner and an infield single by
Brooks Red, but the final out was recorded with the bases still loaded and the Dawgs dropped the game 14-13.
SWOSU (12-12) heads to Arkadelphia, Ark., this weekend for a three-game Great American Conference series at Henderson State, beginning on Friday night at 6:00 pm.
