EDMOND, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball used 14 hits to put 15 runs on the scoreboard as they capped off the Edmond First Pitch Classic with a 15-5 victory over Emporia State in a game that was ended after the eighth inning due to the 10-run rule.
SWOSU got off to a hot start offensively, scoring 10 runs in the first two innings to take control of the game from the outset.
Alex Bedard led off the game with a single and
Alex Pimentel walked, setting up an RBI situation for
Chase Duncan, who came through with a two-run single to put SWOSU up 2-0. That lead, however, would be short-lived as Emporia answered with back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the innings.
The Bulldogs kept things going in the second, chasing ESU's starting pitcher before exploding for eight runs on five hits in the inning. Pimentel drew a bases-loaded walk and
Braden Estraca came through with a two-run single that scored Bedard and
Robert Perea. After
Chase Duncan drew a walk to load the bases,
Caden Hartsburg single to score two runs and
Sawyer Toole stepped to the dish and cleared the bases with a three-run shot over the fence in left center. Once the dust had cleared from the offensive explosion, SWOSU held a 10-2 lead.
Emporia State added single runs in the bottom of the second and seventh innings, cutting the deficit to 10-4 before SWOSU got the bats going again in the top of the eighth. The Bulldogs recorded five hits in the eighth, including RBI doubles off the bats of Estraca, Duncan and
Sawyer Toole that pushed five runs across and upped the lead to 15-4. ESU got one run back in the bottom of the eighth, but left two runners on base as the game ended.
Jose Laboy started the game on the hill for SWOSU and tossed 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
Tyler Barnett (1-0) gave up just three hits and one run over the next three innings to get the win before
Dakota Jones came on to record the final three outs for the Bulldogs.
SWOSU finishes opening weekend with a 2-1 record, which they will carry into next weekend's home-opening series against William Jewell. Game 1 of that series will take place on Friday afternoon at the SWOSU Athletic Complex, with first pitch set for 1:00 pm.
