WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The #13/8-ranked Lady Bulldogs forced Northwestern into 28 turnovers, and converted a season-high 17 steals into 25 points off turnovers as they raced past the Rangers 83-58 on Thursday evening at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
With the victory, the Lady Bulldogs have clinched at least a share of the Great American Conference regular season championship as they improve to 17-0 in league play. SWOSU can secure their second consecutive championship outright with a victory at Southern Nazarene on Saturday. In addition, the Lady Dawgs have now won 22 consecutive games and 30 straight contests played at the PCEC – both of which are program bests for the NCAA Division II era.
Eight different players scored for SWOSU, who was led by
Hailey Tucker with 26 points while also dishing out a career-best seven assists. Six different Lady Bulldogs had a steal in the game, with
Taylor Hedrick leading the way with a career-high five while
Tyra Aska added four and
Hayden Priddy and
Bethany Franks had three apiece. Franks had 11 points, seven rebounds and set a career-high with five assists, helping SWOSU finish the game with 23 assists on 26 made baskets.
Franks and Priddy both had 11 points apiece while
Tyra Aska had 10. SWOSU got contributions off the bench from
Alexa Harvey, who knocked down 3-of-4 three-pointers to match her career-best with nine points and
Maddie Sperle, who was 2-for-4 from the field and hit all four free throws she attempted for eight points.
SWOSU had an advantage of 25-2 in points off turnovers after forcing NWOSU to turn it over 28 times, which is the second-most by a Lady Dawg opponent this season. The 17 steals is a new season high for the team, surpassing the 16 steals they had last Saturday at Oklahoma Baptist.
The Lady Bulldogs, now 22-1 (17-0 GAC) on the year, head to Southern Nazarene on Saturday for a 1:00 pm tipoff in Bethany.
