Box Score (html)
WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Tied 5-5 in the eighth inning, SWOSU Baseball scored four runs to take the lead and eventually went on to claim the game one victory over Southeastern 9-6.
It was
Marion McLean who delivered the two-RBI single in that eighth inning to initially break the tie and give SWOSU the lead. With one out and the bases loaded McLean doubled to right field, bringing in
Brady Burtner and
Daniel Richardson who both walked earlier in the inning.
Next up was
Bryan Miranda who was able to get just enough of the ball he hit to float it into shallow center field, bringing around McLean and pinch hitter
Rafael Villela (who also walked). SWOSU then found themselves just three outs away from the win after scoring the go-ahead runs in the inning.
Brendan Peitsmeyer came in to close things out. Despite allowing three hits and one run in his inning, he pitched with the lead and threw strikes – slowly collecting the three outs in the process to get the Dawgs the victory.
Prior to that eighth inning, both teams traded punches with each other.
Jason Nichols opened up the game's scoring in the second inning when he hit his third home run of the season – a solo shot down the left field line that stayed fair. The score stayed 1-0 in favor of the Bulldogs until the fifth when Southeastern took the lead with three runs themselves.
In the bottom of the fifth, SWOSU answered by tying the game back up at 3-3 with RBI singles from Miranda and
Brooks Benson.
It was the Savage Storm who then again regained the lead in the seventh inning with a pair of runs, before the Dawgs answered with a pair themselves in the bottom half.
SWOSU would get the final blow in the battle in the eighth inning when they took their first lead since the second inning and held on for good.
Drew Grubb got the start on the mound and pitched 5.0 innings. He struck out three and allowed three runs (two earned) in his outing.
Justin Moreno was next in line out of the bullpen and he went 2.0 innings while allowing two runs before giving way to
Tyler Tuck (W, 1-0) who pitched a scoreless eighth. Peitsmeyer came in for the ninth, and despite not earning a save due to the score, still closed things out on the mound for SWOSU.
Alex Pimentel and McLean both notched three hits apiece in the contest, while Miranda and Richardson added two each themselves. SWOSU outhit Southeastern 13-11 in the contest.
The Bulldogs (13-6, 9-1 GAC) will look to claim the series tomorrow with the doubleheader portion of the schedule set to begin at noon out at the Athletic Complex.
