Offense Powers SWOSU to Sweep of Blossoms

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Softball scored in 11 out of 12 innings they played on Friday and used their offensive explosion to sweep Arkansas-Monticello at the Athletic Complex.

SWOSU (3-25, 3-15 GAC) and UAM will conclude their four-game Great American Conference series with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am on Saturday morning.

SWOSU 9, UAM 1 (5 inn.)
Box Score

SWOSU scored in each inning, including three runs apiece in the third and fifth innings to earn the run-rule victory in the series opener. The Dawgs got RBI singles from Kinsey Skroh in the first inning and Bella Garcia in the second to take a 2-0 lead to the third, where they got an RBI groundout from Allyson Gafford before Rileigh Ricken drove a ball deep to left for a two-run homer and made it 5-0.

Amanda Moreno hit an RBI single in the fourth, scoring Hannah Morris to make it 6-0. UAM got on the board with a solo home run in the top of the fifth, but SWOSU had the answer in the bottom of the frame. Sidney Kirk launched her fifth home run of the year to make it 7-1 and the Dawgs loaded the bases for Jacquelyn Lovelace, who hit a grounder to the shortstop that was fielded and thrown high to the plate, allowing two runs to come in for SWOSU and invoke the run rule.

Ricken (1-10) earned her first victory of the season, tossing a complete game and allowing just two hits and one run with three strikeouts. She also scored a team-best three runs in the contest and was one of four players with two hits in the game. Morris, Moreno and Garcia also added multi-hit games for SWOSU.

SWOSU 7, UAM 6
Box Score

The Bulldogs kept things going in the night cap, scoring in each of the first five innings to build a 6-3 lead, but still needed a walkoff hit to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Skroh had RBI hits in the first and second innings and Kirk hit home runs in the third and fourth innings to help SWOSU stay strong at the dish. A double steal allowed Kaitlyn Tottress to take home in the fifth inning and bring the lead to 6-3.

An error by SWOSU's defense allowed UAM to go on and score three unearned runs and tie the game at 6-6 in the sixth, with Miranda Grover getting a strikeout with two runners on base to keep the Blossoms from taking the lead. Grover again had to work with a runner on in the seventh and got another strikeout for the third out, allowing SWOSU the final at-bad.

In the seventh, Keanni Barron drew a leadoff walk and moved up to second with a sac bunt from Morris. After Moreno popped up for the second out of the inning, Skroh came through in the clutch with a hit into right field that enabled Barron to come in for the winning run.

Grover (1-5) entered in relief of Kirk in the second inning and pitched the final 5.2 innings to pick up the victory for SWOSU.
