WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Football dropped their second straight game, falling to Southeastern Oklahoma State 31-20 on Saturday afternoon at ASAP Energy Field in a game that saw the two teams combine for 26 penalties.
SWOSU was guilty of 16 penalties for better than 150 yards while totaling 201 yards of offense. SWOSU trailed 19-6 at the break after
Jalen Carr found the end zone for the second straight week, picking up a fumbled snap on a Southeastern field goal attempt and racing 46 yards for the score.
The Bulldogs pulled within one score twice in the second half, the first with 3:28 to play in the third as
Kedron Banks took his first handoff of the year and scampered 27 yards into the end zone. After Southeastern answered with a score,
Casey Freeman found
JR Omigie on 4th and nine for a 27-yard score that made it 25-20 late in the third quarter.
Southeastern would score on their first drive of the fourth quarter, then end SWOSU's final drive with an interception before putting the game away with an 11-play drive that ran off the final 5:38 from the clock.
SWOSU finished with 136 yards passing and 65 yards rushing, averaging 4.1 yards per play for the game. Freeman completed 18-of-30 passes for 136 yards with one touchdown and one interception while
Jaden Knowles had a team-best 29 yards on six rushing attempts.
The Bulldog defense faced 81 plays from the Savage Storm offense, with 22 players recording a tackle in the contest. Making his first career start,
Diondre Scott led the team with 11 tackles (9 solo, 2 assist) along with one forced fumble and one pass breakup.
Jacob Rodman added 11 stops and forced a fumble while
Clay Wilkerson added nine stops and
Gerald White had eight. Carr made seven tackles to go along with one-half tackle for loss, one pass breakup and the fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.
"I thought in the second half, we were able to eliminate some penalties and got some good field position which allowed us to put some points on the scoreboard," SWOSU Head Coach
Chet Pobolish said. "We gave up some yards on defense, but I thought they played tough and got some timely stops. Moving forward, we have to get better. It's all about us. We aren't focused on our opponent we just need to just need to worry about getting better each week."
SWOSU drops to 2-4 on the year and in GAC play with the loss. The Dawgs return to action next Saturday afternoon at ASAP Energy Field against nationally-ranked Harding.
