WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Elizabeth McVicker put away 17 kills while
Sofia Gruden added 10 as the SWOSU Volleyball team defeated Oklahoma Baptist 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center to salvage a season split against the Bison.
SWOSU used a six-point run on the serve of
Danusia Sipa Borgeaud to gain an early advantage in the first set, opening up an 11-6 lead that they would maintain until ATU went up 23-22 late in the set. From that point, SWOSU scored four of the final five points with two kills from Borgeaud and one from McVicker before taking the set 26-24 as OBU committed a hitting error at set point.
The Bulldogs trailed for most of the second set, including down 20-18 before scoring four straight points – including three kills by McVicker – after head coach
Josh Collins called a timeout. SWOSU pulled away and took the set 25-23 with kills from Gruden and
Emily Holm for the final two points, breaking a 23-all tie. Oklahoma Baptist would then pull away late in the third set, taking it 25-17 to extend the match to the fourth.
SWOSU again battled from behind in the fourth, trailing 12-9 when another Collins timeout turned the momentum to the Bulldogs. McVicker had consecutive kills to tie the set at 12-12, but OBU would answer with a three-set run to go up 16-13 shortly after. The service of
Klemson Lancaster really turned the tide in the fourth as SWOSU went from down 17-15 to up 21-17 with Lancaster at the service line, getting two kills by Gruden and three OBU hitting errors to go along with one service ace.
The Bulldogs pushed ahead to match point at 24-20 with a service ace by
Kaitlyn Dillon, but OBU would fight off the first three points and threaten to tie the set before Borgeaud put it away the set – and match – a kill on the outside.
McVicker and Gruden led the Dawgs offensively while the pin hitters struggled to get much going against the Bison. OBU had advantages in kills (64-55), hitting percentage (.247-.189) and blocks (10-5), but the Bulldogs made up for many of their points at the service line with seven aces and three errors, while the Bison had four aces but committed 12 service errors.
Kaitlyn Dillon led SWOSU with 30 digs, helping the Dawgs to a 96-to-92 advantage in the category.
Kodee Avery added 16 digs while Lancaster chipped in 15.
Allie Hoang had another double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs and McVicker led the way for SWOSU with three block assists.
SWOSU improves to 18-5 on the year and 11-2 in GAC play with three matches remaining in the regular season. Next week will see the Dawgs play just once, on Thursday night with a trip to Ada to face East Central.
