Baseball Takes Both Ends of Friday Doubleheader vs SNU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball were winners in both sides of the doubleheader Friday out at the Athletic Complex, beating Southern Nazarene 4-2 in game one and 5-1 in game two. The Dawgs got two solid outings on the mound from both starting pitchers and added just enough run support in the brutal wind to collect the opening day sweep.

Saturday's final game has been moved up to a noon start time in preparation for incoming rain that is projected in the forecast.

Game One
SWOSU 4, Southern Nazarene 2
Box Score (html)

The offense got things going right away in the opening inning, collecting infield singles to load the bases. With two outs, Rogelio Sanchez produced another infield single to score the first run of the game and keep the inning alive. Next up was Connor Anderson who singled through the six hole to drive in a run before Jason Nichols was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second to end the inning.

A Joshua Santos double down the left-field line in the next inning would plate the third run of the game. Concluding the scoring for the Dawgs was Joel Baxley in the fifth with an RBI groundout after an error sparked base runners in the inning.

Brendan Peitsmeyer pitched 7.0 innings, striking out three and walking none to even his record back up at 4-4 on the season. The Bulldog starter gave up eight hits, but allowed just one run that came in the fourth inning. The ball was then passed to Quintin Dougherty for the remaining two innings, who conceded one run in the ninth but earned his fourth save of the season.

Game Two
SWOSU 5, Southern Nazarene 1
Box Score (html)

In the seven-inning game, Jeremy Smith pitched the distance to collect his first win of the season. The senior struck out nine and walked four, while holding SNU to just two hits. Smith also managed to take a no-hit bid into the fifth inning before it was finally broken up.

After the Crimson Storm tied the game up on a wild pitch in the fifth, SWOSU answered back immediately with a run of their own in the bottom half to retake the lead. The following inning, the Bulldogs added three runs of insurance on three hits and two SNU errors to give themselves breathing room for the Southern Nazarene's final rally.

Smith loaded the bases with no outs after back-to-back walks and a single to start the seventh, but bowed his neck to retire the final three hitters he faced and hold the Crimson Storm to no runs in the inning to shutdown the comeback.
