MAGNOLIA, Ark. – SWOSU Baseball lost to Southern Arkansas 7-1 on Saturday to drop all three games on the weekend to the Great American Conference's top team. All seven runs the Muleriders scored came early, as SAU had all of their runs cross in the opening two innings.
The second inning plagued the Bulldogs who allowed six runs on four hits, one error and four walks (one hit by pitch) in the frame. The pitching staff bowed their neck after the early mishap to hold Southern Arkansas scoreless the rest of the way, but it was too late.
The Bulldog offense score its lone run of the game in the sixth when
Danny-David Linahan got on base from a leadoff single and later came around to score from a sacrifice fly. The leadoff hit in the inning also broke up SAU's no-hitter bid that starting pitcher Kenneth Tabor was at the time throwing. SWOSU ended the afternoon with just four hits.
Justin Moreno and
Blake Gooden came out of the bullpen to clean up starting pitcher
Gunnar Cook's rough start to the game. Moreno came in during the second inning, and allowed his inherited runs to score from an error after walking two Muleriders and settled in during his final inning to throw 1.2 inning in relief. Gooden threw the final 5.0 innings, striking out three and scattering three hits to hold SAU to zeros on the scoreboard. Cook was charged with the loss and falls to 2-2 on the season.
SWOSU (9-14, 5-8 GAC) will now play Oklahoma City in a midweek non-conference game before hosting Arkansas-Monticello on Friday and Saturday in another GAC series.
