WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Softball dropped both games to the No. 4-ranked Southern Arkansas Muleriders on Friday by scores of 8-1 and 5-4. After letting a close first game get away from them in the final two innings, the Bulldogs spotted the Muleriders a 5-0 lead in the nightcap that they could not comeback from.
The second doubleheader will begin at 11:00 am tomorrow from the Athletic Complex as the Bulldogs will try to salvage a split with Southern Arkansas.
Game One
Box Score (html)
Southern Arkansas 8, SWOSU 1
The Bulldogs grabbed an early lead after scoring a run in the opening inning from a two-out single from
Taya Haney that scored
Tori Hawk from second base. That run would be the only form of scoring for SWOSU in the game after compiling only two more hits in the contest the rest of the way.
The Muleriders would go on to take the lead in the third inning after scoring two runs on three hits including two doubles. After adding another run in their half of the fifth, SAU put the game away with five more runs in the sixth by taking advantage of three Dawg errors that made every run in the inning unearned.
In the circle, Haney did her best to keep SWOSU in the game but ended up giving up seven runs despite four of those being unearned through 5.1 innings.
Miranda Grover came in for Haney and pitched the final 1.2 innings, giving up one unearned run in relief.
Game Two
Box Score (html)
Southern Arkansas 5, SWOSU 4
Down 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth with bases loaded,
Tori Hawk doubled in all three runs to cut the Bulldog deficit to just 5-3. After going scoreless in the sixth, SWOSU rallied to get runners on second and third with no outs and in great position to tie up the game.
A sacrifice fly brought in the first run and moved the runner on second over to third, but with one out a tough luck pass ball to the backstop bounced right to the catcher and
Keanni Barron was tagged out at the plate to deny SWOSU's tying run and empty the bases with then two outs.
Rileigh Ricken pitched a complete game as was responsible for all five of the runs given up, but gave SWOSU a quality start and kept the Dawgs in the game. Despite her efforts, the loss drops her record to 0-3 on the season.
Sidney Kirk came through with a multi-hit game including the rally starting double in the final inning.
