DURANT, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball took game one of the series against Southeastern 6-0 on Sunday in dominant fashion.
Richard Marches hit for the cycle while
Brendan Peitsmeyer pitched a nine-inning shutout, both helping lead the Dawgs to victory.
The Bulldogs shutout the Savage Storm on the opening day of the Great American Conference, evening up their league record to 5-5 and are now 9-10 overall on the season. The offense scored runs in five of the nine frames of the contest, giving starting pitcher Peitsmeyer more than enough support to earn his first complete game and third win of the season.
Peitsmeyer's final line was 9.0 innings pitched, five hits, four strikeouts and one walk to improve to 3-2 on the season. The junior's outing helps save the rest of the bullpen for the doubleheader that will begin tomorrow at noon.
Marches led the Bulldog attack all day, beginning the afternoon 4-for-4 in the batter's box before finally fouling out to finish 4-for-5. It was the substance of his four hits that was impressive however, as the freshman hit for the cycle with a double in the third inning, a single in the fifth, a solo homerun in the seventh and finally a triple down the right-field line in the eighth to become the only SWOSU player this season to collect four hits of any kind in a single game.
Going into the contest, the Bulldogs had four total triples on the season through eighteen games. Marches, Patrick O' Toole and
Rogelio Sanchez all hit three baggers on Sunday to nearly tie that mark in a single game. Josh Santos,
Rafael Otero and Sanchez all contributed two hits in the game, while
Ruben Rodriguez was the only Dawg to drive in more than one run.
The Dawgs will go for their third-consecutive GAC series victory tomorrow in game one of the doubleheader from Durant, and will then play against following the contest at around 3:00 pm.
