Softball Holds off Midwestern State to Open Round Robin

Box Score (html)

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – SWOSU Softball improved to 3-4 on the season by scoring three runs in the first inning and holding off Midwestern State for a 3-2 victory on Friday evening at the MSU Round Robin in Wichita Falls.

SWOSU pushed all three runs across in the opening frame, getting four hits while taking advantage of three Midwestern State errors to take the early 3-0 lead. Taya Haney singled and scored in the inning while Tori Hawk doubled and scored on a throwing error by the Mustangs. Sydney Kirk hit an RBI single, bringing home Miranda West for the third and final run of the inning.

That would be all the scoring the game saw until a busy fourth inning with Midwestern State getting one run on two hits before SWOSU got out of the jam with the bases loaded. A leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth inning got the Mustangs within one run, but they stranded a combined four runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings as the Bulldogs were able to hang on for the victory.

SWOSU's offense generated 10 hits but left seven runners on base. Tori Hawk had a 2-for-4 outing with a double and an RBI while Morgan Swisher and Abigail Schade also had two-hit games. The Bulldogs used a pair of pitchers, with Miranda Grover (1-0) earning the victory by holding MSU to one run on four hits in 3.1 innings of work. Kaytlin Donaldson had the same line over the final 3.2 innings and earned her first collegiate save.

The win improves SWOSU to 3-4 on the year heading into a pair of games on Saturday at the MSU Round Robin. The Dawgs will face Colorado Mines at 9:30 am before returning to the field at 5:00 pm to meet Southwest Baptist.
