WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Volleyball picked up their fourth consecutive Great American Conference victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Arkansas-Monticello 3-0 inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center in Weatherford.
SWOSU had one of their better offensive showings of the season, hitting .202 with 43 kills against 18 attack errors on 124 attack attempts.
Valerie Vermillion led the Bulldogs balanced attack with 10 kills while
DeLayni Fine had nine,
Addie Aman added eight,
Sofia Gruden chipped in seven while all four players had an attack percentage of .250 or higher.
The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire in the first set, closing it off at 25-19 to take the early lead. UAM responded and scored 10 consecutive points to take a 15-11 lead midway through the second set, but SWOSU got back to even with an ace from
Allie Hoang that finished off a four-point for the Dawgs. A pair of attack errors by Monticello and a kill from Fine ended the second set at 25-23 to put SWOSU firmly in control.
The third and ultimately final set was another controlled throughout by the Bulldogs, who scored the first three points and never looked back. SWOSU used an 8-1 run in the middle of the set to push the lead to 12 at 18-6 before pushing ahead and ending the match on a big block by Gruden and
Kodee Avery.
Avery had a match-best 36 assists to go along with eight digs.
Kaitlyn Dillon led the Bulldogs with 11 digs while
Lindsey McCauley and Hoang had 10 apiece, helping the Dawgs to a 56-to-51 advantage in digs for the match.
"I felt like we played tough on defense today but I thought we played really well on offense as well," SWOSU Head Coach
Josh Collins said after the match. "It's good to see some of those offensive numbers we put up and we had some big plays defensively to keep us alive in the second set. It's another hard-fought win, I feel like this team is starting to click so this is a good time for us to hit our stride and keep getting better."
SWOSU Volleyball improves to 8-13 on the year and 5-2 in Great American Conference play with the victory. The Dawgs are back at home on Tuesday evening for a non-conference victory against Southwestern Christian beginning at 7:00 pm inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
