SWOSU Settles for Split, Drops First Conference Series


WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU got strong starting pitching on Saturday but had to settle for a split with Oklahoma Baptist, who won the three-game Great American Conference series 2-1. The Bulldogs (17-10, 10-5 GAC) return to action on Tuesday at Oklahoma Christian.

Gunnar Cook pitched a complete game for the Dawgs, allowing just four hits and one earned run with 10 strikeouts in the nine-inning opener. Cook improved to 5-2 with the win, which evened the series at one game apiece to set the stage for a showdown in the rubber match.
 
SWOSU got out quick offensively, putting two runs on the board in the first inning as Korbin Polston slugged a two-run home run to left field to make it 2-0 in favor of the Dawgs after an inning. That lead would grow in the sixth inning as SWOSU put three more runs up with Tanner Dearman scoring on a passed ball before Jacob Spring and Zach Barton hit RBI singles to score Joshua Santos and Polston.
 
OBU got their lone run of the game on a solo homer in the top of the eighth inning.

SWOSU got two runs in the bottom of the first inning, getting an RBI double from Spring and an RBI single from Barton to take a 2-1 lead that would stand up until the top of the seventh inning, when OBU scored three runs to go ahead and hold on for the victory.
 
Devin Ring tossed the first 5.1 innings and allowed six hits and just one run before coming in favor of Dillon Freie and Quinton Dougherty who closed the sixth inning. Dougherty (0-1) got roughed up in the seventh and took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits.
