WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Softball showed their resiliency on Sunday, quickly rebounding from a tough extra-inning loss to defeat Arkansas-Monticello and split the doubleheader at the Athletic Complex. The two teams meet again at noon on Monday to conclude the series.
Arkansas-Monticello 3, SWOSU 1 (8 inn.)Box Score The opener was a pitcher's duel that saw SWOSU record just two hits, but the Bulldogs thought they had broken a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Miranda McDonald slugged a two-out, two-run triple to right field. The umpire, however, ruled that McDonald took the swing from outside the batter's box and instead of SWOSU taking the lead, their threat was ended.
No runs were score in the final two innings and UAM got two runners on before a two-run double proved to be the difference in the extra innings. McDonald had both of SWOSU's hits and scored the lone run, which came in the first inning off a UAM error.
Taya Haney (2-7) was the tough-luck loser in the circle, allowing seven hits and three runs in a complete-game, 8.0 inning effort.
SWOSU 4, Arkansas-Monticello 3Box Score After struggling offensively in the opener, SWOSU got things going with 10 hits and they again struck early with a first-inning unearned run. UAM scored the next three runs and took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning, which is when the Bulldogs got going offensively.
Miranda West and
Abigail Schade both singled to start the inning before
Emily Garcia came through with an RBI double to get one run on the board.
Samantha Householder and
Tori Hawk followed up with RBI singles, allowing SWOSU to regain the lead 4-3 heading into the fifth frame.
Taylor Eaves clamped down on the Blossoms in the final three innings, allowing five hits but no runs across as SWOSU held on for their third conference victory of the season. Eaves (1-6) relieved
Larie Amos and earned her first victory of the year, holding UAM scoreless in the final 3.2 innings despite six hits.
