Baseball Takes Down USAO for 10th Win of Season

Box Score (html)

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Bulldog Baseball improved to 4-1 on their current home stand with a 7-5 victory over the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) on Tuesday afternoon at the Athletic Complex. The victory is also the 10th of the season for the Bulldogs, who improve to 10-6 on the year with the win.

SWOSU did all of their damage offensively in the middle innings, scoring four runs in the fourth to take the lead and adding three runs in the sixth to put the game away. The Bulldogs entered the fourth inning trailing 2-0 and tied the game up on a USAO error. Korbin Polston kept the inning going with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Jacob Spring scored Joshua Santos to make it 4-2 in favor of the Dawgs after four innings.

Polston reached after being hit by a pitch in the sixth inning and Spring followed him up with an RBI double that made it 5-2. Trent Troxell then singled and Justin Freeman hit an RBI double to bring home the final two runs of the inning as SWOSU took control of the game. USAO scored single runs in each of the final inning, but SWOSU's relievers kept the damage to a minimum, allowing the Dawgs to earn the non-conference victory.

Austin Hilton got the start for SWOSU and allowed one run on two hits in the first 3.0 innings, but it was Ben Schweifurth (2-0) earning the victory on the mound after allowing three hits and one run in the fourth and fifth innings.

"I'm proud of our guys for going out and getting a good midweek win against a quality opponent," SWOSU Head Coach Zack Saunders said following the game. "We had a solid performance on the mound from multiple guys and some timely hits that opened it up for us. It was nice to see our group find a way to win even when we weren't perfect today."

SWOSU (10-6) faces GAC preseason favorite Southern Arkansas, a team the Dawgs are tied with at 4-2 in the league standings, this weekend for three games at the Athletic Complex. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday afternoon, beginning at noon.
