WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Bulldog softball needed extra innings to defeat Missouri Southern and fell to Pittsburg State on the first day of the Southeastern Invitational in Durant. SWOSU is in action twice more on Saturday at the tournament.
SWOSU 3, Missouri Southern 2 (8 inn.)Box Score Two runs in the opening frame allowed SWOSU enough cushion to go to extra innings and pick up their first win of the 2016 season. MSSU had four walks in the opening frame and
Tori Hawk cashed in with an RBI single to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead early on, but the Lions got a two-run homer in the fourth inning to tie the game up.
Neither team recorded a hit in the final four frames, but thanks to the international tiebreaker SWOSU pushed across the winning run on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning while
Taya Haney shut down the side in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Haney (1-0) allowed just three hits and two earned runs while striking out five with five walks in her first outing as a Bulldog. Five different players had a hit for SWOSU with Hawk and
Taylor Canida collecting an RBI each.
Pittsburg State 7, SWOSU 2Box Score Pittsburg State scored four runs in the top of the first inning, which included a three-run home run, and left SWOSU playing from behind the entire game. The lead expanded to 7-0 in the fourth inning before SWOSU scored once in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Selika Shives and Kennedi Jackson had two hits apiece, with Shives and
Alex Wilson accounting for SWOSU's runs.
Kaley Reding (0-1) took the loss after allowing four earned runs in three innings of work before
Taylor Eaves tossed the final four innings, allowing three runs on three hits.
SWOSU (1-1) plays two more games on Saturday at the Southeastern Invitational, facing Emporia State (12:30 pm) and Central Oklahoma (3:00 pm).
