SWOSU Softball Slowed Up at Southeastern Invitational


DURANT, Okla. – SWOSU Softball suffered three setbacks in the final two days of the Southeastern Regional Invitational in Durant, finishing the opening week with a record of 1-4. The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday with the first of four games at the Texas A&M-Kingsville Tournament.

After a lengthy delay to tournament games Saturday, SWOSU began it's first of two games of the day against Emporia.  Scoring started for Emporia in the third inning as they scored 5 runs behind 6 hits, including a home run to start the inning from center fielder, Morgan Swisher.  SWOSU scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap as a leadoff walk by Miranda West set the tone as she and left fielder, Miranda McDonald both scored in the inning, closing the gap to 5-3. 
 
Emporia State hit another leadoff home run in the top of the fifth as Sarah Glass hit a home run to left field, Glass finished 3-for-4.  That would be the only score until the top of the seventh when Emporia scored three more runs.  Caitlin VanVleck reached base 4-of-5 at-bats and hit the third Hornet home run, a two-run home run in the top of the seventh. 
 
Taya Haney (1-1) picked up the loss.  Offensively, the Bulldogs (1-2) were led by juniors Tori Hawk and Alex Wilson

Double digit hits for SWOSU leads to runs but isn't enough to beat the Bronchos.
 
Leadoff hitter, Tori Hawk started the game with a single and later scored to start the scoring in game two of the day.  UCO hitter, Lexi Watson, tied the game in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI double.  For SWOSU, Kenedi Jackson added a single in the top of the third inning then scored on an RBI single from Alex Wilson.  Central Oklahoma took a one run lead after scoring in both the bottom of the second and third, however.  In the bottom of the fourth, UCO added 5 runs, including a three-run home run from freshman Carli Jones to stretch their lead to 8-2. 
 
Southwestern responded offensively in the top of the fifth with three runs of their own.  Alex Wilson started the inning with a single then stole second.  Selika Shives singled to right field following Wilson, scoring her from second.  After a fly out, Emily Garcia and Abbey Schade singled to load the bases for the Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs scored 2 runs following a fielder's choice and an RBI single from Kenedi Jackson, bringing the score after five to 8-5.
 
To start the sixth inning, Southwestern started with four consecutive hits but were only able to plate 2 runs after mistakes on the bases.  The scoring was capped by the Bulldogs first home run of the season, coming from freshman Bonna Molina and had the Bulldogs only trailing by one heading into the bottom of the sixth. 
 
The Bronchos extended their lead for a run-rule win in the bottom of the sixth inning after walks and timely hitting scored 7 runs.  The Bronchos were led by sophomore Morgan Heard's 5-for-5 day at the plate and tallied 15 total hits in the contest.  Southwestern was led by Alex Wilson's 3-for-4 day along with two hits apiece from Kenedi Jackson and Emily Garcia as well as the home run from Molina.

To conclude the Southeastern Tournament, SWOSU finished with a 5-0 loss to the Jennies of Central Missouri.  UCM started their scoring in the first inning behind RBI's from Lauren Mabe and a double by freshman, Hailey Crabtree.   UCM added more runs in the third and fourth innings.  A fielder's choice allowed Ali Jo Rogers to score in the third then a solo home run by sophomore outfielder Katie Giancone and a throwing error plated Austin Eickleberry to increase the lead to 5-0. 
 
Taylor Eaves (0-2) went the distance in the circle for the Bulldogs (1-4), striking out six.  The Bulldogs were lead offensively by juniors Abbey Schade and Miranda McDonald, both with two hits as well as freshman Bonna Molina who also had 2 hits.
