Second Half Surge Pushes SWOSU Past Southeastern on Senior Night

Box Score (html)

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Seniors Martell Collins, Juwan Newmen and Emeche Wells combined to score 52 points and help the Bulldogs overcome an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Southeastern Oklahoma State 79-68 on Senior Night at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.

Trailing 39-31 at halftime after shooting just 32.5% from the field in the opening half, the Bulldogs roared out of the locker room by scoring the first eight points of the second half to tie the game at 39-39. Southeastern retained a one-possession lead for most of the next five minutes before SWOSU's defense turned into offense and gave the Bulldogs the lead for good.

SWOSU trailed 48-45 just before the 12-minute media timeout, but the defensive intensity picked up and led to steals by Wells on back-to-back possessions, one cashed in by Collins for a lay-up and the second hammered home by Wells himself to give SWOSU a 49-48 lead. After Southeastern missed a three pointer, Wells grabbed the rebound and the Bulldogs pushed the ball ahead until Collins found the bottom of the net with a three that capped a 7-0 lead, making it 52-48 heading to the media timeout.

The Bulldogs would maintain the lead the rest of the way despite shooting just 35.5% from the field for the game, but they were much improved at the free throw line, where they hit 20-of-29 (69%) attempts for the game. SWOSU took care of the ball admirably, committing just six turnovers while forcing 19 and they had 27 points off turnover and 12 fast break points.

Leading the way for SWOSU was Collins, who totaled 20 points and Wells, who scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds to go along with three steals. Newmen added 14 points and nine rebounds, but his effort was upstaged by Keyshawn Perkins, who grabbed 11 rebounds – six offensive – to go along with five assists and four steals while providing great energy for SWOSU in 22 minutes of action.

"I thought Keyshawn's energy in the second half really ignited us," SWOSU Head Coach Bob Battisti said. "We tried too hard in the first half instead of just enjoying the competition and I think a lot of that was because our guys really wanted to prove themselves coming off Monday's game. Our guys are well deserving of this win and I'm glad they had a strong crowd behind them tonight."

SWOSU (15-10, 11-8 GAC) wins their sixth straight game at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center to end the season 11-5 on their home court. The Bulldogs finish the season with three straight road games, beginning on Saturday at Oklahoma Baptist.
