RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – SWOSU Soccer has had two freshman named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Women's Soccer All-America Team that was announced Wednesday morning.
Alimata Rabo earned first team recognition while
Sandra Nabweteme was named to the second team.
Sports information directors from NCAA Division II schools and conferences selected the three D2CCA All-America teams. The process begins at the regional level with all first-team all-region picks advancing to the national ballot. A total of 53 student-athletes representing 29 different institutions filled out the three teams and the honorable mention squad.
Rabo, the 2016 Player of the Year in both the Central Region and Great American Conference, is one of two freshman this year to be named a D2CCA First Team All-America player. Rabo broke SWOSU's single-season scoring record by netting 22 balls throughout the course of the season, shattering
Samantha Nunez's 2015 record of 12 goals and in her one year of competition and is six goals away from Nunez's school record of 28 goals scored in a career. The redshirt freshman also received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Player of the Week award back on September 13 which was only the second time a Bulldog has ever been recognized by the organization. Rabo garnered three GAC Offensive Player of the Week awards throughout the season, the most by any player in the conference. She ended the regular season fourth in the NCAA Division II with 22 goals scored which at the time was only two goals away from the national leader. Her nine assists on the year also tied for the GAC lead with fellow teammate Nabweteme.
Nabweteme, the Great American Conference's Freshman of the Year, is the only freshman to be named to the D2CCA Women's Soccer All-America Second Team. She has already been recognized as a First Team D2CCA All-Central Region and All-Great American Conference selection this season. Nabweteme was awarded the conference's offensive weekly honor twice throughout the season and ranked second in the league with her 19 goals scored in the regular season which, at the time, was also fifth best in NCAA Division II. In the GAC Postseason Tournament, Nabweteme scored three of SWOSU's five goals to tie her with Rabo at 22 goals for the year and finish tied for fourth with Rabo in all of NCAA Division II for scoring.
Rabo and Nabweteme become the first SWOSU players to earn D2CCA All-America honors, and the second and third All Americans in school history after Josie Price was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American back in 2012. The pair of freshman were two of only four total freshman that made a D2CCA All-America team this season including honorable mentions.
