WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Women's Basketball lost in their season opener to No. four-ranked Emporia State 87-65 Saturday night in Emporia, Kan. for the first day of the GAC / MIAA Crossover.
Hailey Tucker led the way for the Lady Bulldogs against the Lady Hornets, collecting a double-double in the game by posting 26 points and 12 rebounds.
SWOSU was outscored in every quarter except the third, when the Lady Bulldogs edged the Lady Hornets by a two-point advantage in the 10-minute session. The Dawgs led at the very start of the game after two free throws from
Tyra Aska, but from that was the only lead SWOSU would hold all game. The Lady Bulldogs trailed 26-15 at the end of the first quarter, and 49-26 at the half.
In the third quarter, after opening up out of the locker room on a 7-0 run and scoring 11 of the second half's first 13 points, the Lady Bulldogs cut the deficit to 14 before Emporia answered with a small run of their own to deter the comeback. In the quarter, the Lady Dawgs outscored the Lady Hornets 22-20 but were unable to cut into the ESU lead.
After being outscored by one point in the game's final quarter, SWOSU fell to the No. 4-ranked Emporia State Lady Hornets 87-65. Tucker's double-double highlighted the night for the Lady Bulldogs, followed by
Taylor Hedrick's 10 point performance to go along with her four steals. Aska was one point shy of the double digit scoring mark, finishing with nine points, three assists, and four rebounds. SWOSU ended the game shooting nearly 32 percent from the field while knocking down five of seventeen attempted three-point shots. The Dawg defense held the Lady Hornets to 36 percent shooting on the night and forced more turnovers than Emporia, but gave up 19 more shots than ESU that ended up being the difference in the game.
The loss drops the Lady Bulldogs to 0-1 on the season heading into tomorrow's finale of the GAC / MIAA Crossover. SWOSU will play Missouri Southern State at 2:00 pm looking to even their record back up in opening weekend of the season.
