WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Haden Houska had three hits and an RBI while
Jacob Spring and
Zach Barton also had multi-hit games, but Arkansas Tech still downed the Bulldogs 9-4 on Friday afternoon in the first of a three-game Great American Conference series at the Athletic Complex.
The Wonder Boys scored three runs in the second and one in the third to take a 4-0 lead and they roughed up reigning GAC Pitcher of the Week
Jon Chidester for six runs (three earned) on nine hits, chasing him from the game in the 7th inning. SWOSU got within two runs twice, scoring a pair of runs in both the fourth and seventh innings, but they were able to get no closer.
Bryan Holt walked to leadoff the fourth inning before Spring tripled to the gap in right center, scoring the Bulldogs first run of the game. Barton was SWOSU's next batter up and he scored Holt on an RBI groundout. An error by ATU and back-to-back singles from
Dalton Daniels and
Haden Houska scored the Bulldogs first run of the seventh inning, setting up for an RBI double from Spring that got the Bulldogs within two at 6-4 after seven innings.
The Wonder Boys got a leadoff double and a two-run home run as part of a three-run ninth inning off SWOSU reliever
Taylor Weifenbach, extending their lead to 9-4, which proved to be the final count.
Chidester (5-5) takes the loss after allowing nine hits and six runs in 6.1 innings of work with three walks and one strikeout.
SWOSU falls to 16-21 overall and 9-13 in league play with two games against Arkansas Tech tomorrow starting at noon to conclude the series. The Bulldogs will also honor their five seniors prior to first pitch of Saturday's doubleheader.
