Dawgs Earn Saturday Split to Win Series against Southern Nazarene


WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball outlasted Southern Nazarene 6-5 in the opening game of their doubleheader on Saturday, clinching the series win before the Crimson Storm responded with a 7-0 victory in game two as the Bulldogs won their third Great American Conference series of the season.

Tyler Troxell came through with the deciding hit, breaking a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a bases-loaded double that scored three runs and put the Bulldogs up 6-3. It gave SWOSU enough insurance to withstand two runs in the top of the eighth inning and earn the 6-5 victory.
 
Troxell finished 2-for-3 from the field with one run scored and three RBI to lead the way while Tyler Rapp also had two hits in the game. Korbin Polston had the other RBI for SWOSU, who scored two runs in the fourth inning when a Haden Houska infield single turned into two runs following a pair of throwing errors on the Crimson Storm.
 
Connor Garcia got the start for SWOSU and went 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs before Taylor Weifenbach entered the game in relief. Weifenbach allowed just one hit in 1.1 innings of work and earned the victory to improve to 2-1 on the year. Ethan Davis was called upon with two outs in the eighth and recorded the final four outs to earn his third save of the season.

The series finale was entirely controlled by the Crimson Storm, who knocked out 10 hits and pushed across seven runs, including four in the top of the final inning. CJ Faddis had a two-hit game for the Bulldogs, who left seven runners on base for the game.
 
Austin Hilton was saddled with the loss, dropping to 1-3 on the year, after allowing 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) in six innings of work. Austin Hannum walked both batters he faced before Ben Schweifurth recorded all three outs in the top of the seventh inning.
 
 
SWOSU earns their third GAC series win out of their last four with the Saturday split and they improve to 10-13 (7-8 GAC) on the year following the set. Next weekend is the conference bye for SWOSU, but the Bulldogs will stay busy with five games against non-conference foes scheduled over spring break, starting with a trip to Mid-America Christian on Tuesday.
