SWOSU Baseball Triumphs Past #21 Javelinas

Box Score (html)

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Bulldog baseball used an outpouring of offense to pick up their first victory of the season, a 9-1 triumph over #21 Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday afternoon at the QuikTrip Division II Classic in Grand Prairie.

Kingsville started the scoring, getting a leadoff triple in the first inning followed by a groundout that allowed the runner to score from third. It was all SWOSU from that point on, however as Kingsville only recorded three more base hits and the game while the Bulldog offense exploded.

Korbin Polston doubled in the second and Haden Houska reached on an error, setting the stage for a two-run double to left center by Bryan Holt, giving the Bulldogs their first lead at 2-1. SWOSU then loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth inning for Jacob Spring, who unloaded the bags with a triple to the right center gap that put SWOSU up 5-1. Polston then came through with an RBI double to score Spring and send SWOSU to the fifth inning with a 8-1 lead.

While the Bulldogs controlled the game offensively, the defense and pitching also thrived with SWOSU turning two double plays in the final five innings. Meanwhile, on the hill, Jon Chidester (1-1) cruised and allowed just four hits and one run in 7.0 innings of work while striking out six batters and walking just one. Ben Schweifurth took over for the final two innings, retiring six of the seven batters he faced to close out the game.

SWOSU added an RBI single from Christian Perez in the eighth inning, scoring Holt from third before Daniels was gunned out at the plate to end the inning.

Perez, Polson, Houska and Holt all had multi-hit games for the Bulldogs while Spring lead the way with three RBI and Holt added two. Eight of the Bulldogs nine batters recorded a hit in the game while everybody reached base at least once as SWOSU totaled a season-high 12 hits.

The Bulldogs improve to 1-3 on the year with the victory heading into a 10:00 am matchup with Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday.
