Softball Held Off by Cotton Blossoms on Second Day

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Bulldogs Softball team were unable to record a win despite recording 22 hits in the last two games of a four-game conference series against Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday afternoon at the SWOSU Athletic Complex.

Game 1: UAM 5, SWOSU 4 (8 INN.)
Box Score

Monticello struck first on a windy day at the Complex as they plated one in the top of the first to go along with three runs. SWOSU responded immediately, taking a 2-1 lead after a pair of errors allowed Ashley Dunigan to score and move Miranda McDonald into scoring position. Ashley Jones singled to left to bring in McDonald.

Rileigh Ricken did well to keep the Cotton Blossoms off the scoreboard over the next four innings, but SWOSU was unable to increase their lead over that span, recording just five hits over the next six innings. UAM was able to tie it up in the top of the sixth. Then, with two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, McDonald grounded out to strand two runners to send the game to extra innings.

The Blossoms picked up three more runs in the top of the eighth, and then it was SWOSU's turn to answer. Despite RBIs by Samantha Perry and Kendall Smith, the rally fell short as Katelyn White flew out to center field with two runners on base.

Ricken fell to 3-3 as a result of the loss. Perry led the Bulldogs offensively, going 2-4 at the plate with one RBI. Adrienne Martinez led the team in putouts with six, while White had five.

Game 2: UAM 6, SWOSU 3
Box Score

Just like in the first game, the Cotton Blossoms got on the board first. Facing a 2-0 hole in the bottom of the first, Martinez singled up the middle. Jones stepped up to the plate next and, despite the wind blowing into the field, hit a two-run bomb over left centerfield to tie the game.

SWOSU went scoreless through the next five innings, but Monticello was able to build a 6-2 lead heading into the final half-inning. The Bulldogs were able to put one on the board thanks to a fielding error after a Perry at-bat that brought in Courtney Miller. Makensy Payne struck out the next at-bat to give UAM the four-game sweep.

Vivo picked up her fifth loss of the season and her second of the weekend. Maci Brown led the offense, batting .750 in four at-bats.

The losses drop SWOSU to 0-4 in conference play and 4-11 overall. They will return to action next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28 for a four-game series against Southern Nazarene. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
