MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Bulldogs pushed their win streak to six games following a 77-74 victory on the road against Southern Arkansas on Saturday afternoon. With the win, SWOSU went a perfect 3-0 on their three-game road trip.
A balanced attack aided the Dawgs in victory as five different players finished in double figures, led by
Markeise Champion with 16 points.
Emeche Wells and
Collin Jennings continued their consistent output, matching each other with 13 points apiece.
Martell Collins also had 12 points and Juwane Newmen notched 11.
Despite seeing an early lead evaporate, the Bulldogs weathered the storm and won the half 40-35. Jennings led all Bulldogs with nine points, connecting on all three of his long-range attempts, while also swiping the ball twice. The Muleriders seized the initiative on the boards, outrebounding SWOSU 21-13 in the half. The difference proved to be in points off turnovers and the play of the two benches. The Dawgs turned 12 forced turnovers into 15 points, while SWOSU's bench outscored SAU's 12-1.
In the second half, SWOSU managed to maintain their lead, but SAU made it close. SWOSU had nine turnovers in the half, which turned into 17 Mulerider points. As a result, the Dawgs turned to their bench where Champion and Newmen came up big with a combined 17 points, while
Luke Lewallen also accounted for two points. SWOSU also narrowed the rebounding margin, to a slim 24-20 SAU advantage, led by five boards for Newmen. A late rally by the Muleriders fell short as Collins and Jennings finished at the line.
SWOSU (6-1, 4-0 GAC) returns home for a game against Southwestern Christian on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
