Box Score NORMAN, Okla. – Jennifer Williams scored a team-high 23 points – a mark she reached only twice last season – to lead the SWOSU Lady Bulldogs in their exhibition game against No. 17 Oklahoma on Wednesday evening at the Lloyd Noble Center.
Oklahoma scored at least 24 points in each quarter but had a lead of just nine at 29-20 after the opening period. The Sooners pushed that ahead by outscoring the Lady Dawgs 30-14 in the second quarter, taking a 59-34 lead at the break.
SWOSU outscored the Sooners 13-4 to open the second half, largely on the heels of Williams, who scored 11 points in that stretch. After Williams picked up her third foul and headed to the bench in the middle of the quarter, OU outscored SWOSU 17-7 and again extended their lead to 87-57 after three quarters. The Sooners then opened the fourth quarter on a 16-0 run to top the 100-point mark and they coasted throughout the period to close the game with a final score of 111-73.
Williams finished with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, which included a pair of three-pointers, and she also had three rebounds and one assist in the game.
Jade Jones was the only other Lady Dawg to reach double figures in scoring as she totaled 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Hailey Tucker hit a trio of three-pointers in the first quarter, but she was held to nine points for the game.
SWOSU hit 8-of-29 (27.6%) attempts from long range and connected on 36.8% of their field goal attempts for the game. Oklahoma outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs 64-to-48 and the Sooners had 15 steals in the game, part of 28 turnovers committed by SWOSU. One stat category won by the Lady Bulldogs was blocks as
Korina Chapman and
Janae Coffee had three apiece, helping SWOSU to nine blocked shots in the contest compared to eight for OU.
"I thought we executed our offense and we were able to get the shots we wanted for the most part," SWOSU Head Coach
Kelsi Musick noted during her postgame interview. "The positive is we were able to score 73 points against a Big 12 defense and we did that because we shared the ball and executed on offense. We need to limit turnovers and rebound better, but those are two things we can work on."
The Lady Bulldogs are done with preseason play and they will open the 2015-16 regular season next Friday and Saturday (Nov. 13-14) with the SWOSU Classic. First up for SWOSU is the No. 1-ranked team in NCAA Division II as Emporia State visits the Pioneer Cellular Event Center next Friday evening at 5:30 pm for an early-season showdown.
