SWOSU Eases Past SNU 88-71

Box Score

BETHANY, Okla. – Korina Chapman tied a career-high with 20 points to lead SWOSU past Southern Nazarene 88-71 inside the Sawyer Center in Bethany, Okla., on Thursday night in Great American Conference action.

Chapman had not scored in double digits since she set her career-high of 20 points against the University of Science and Arts on December 30 of last year. Against the Crimson Storm, however, she exploded for 20 points, including 12 in the first half, on 7-13 shooting and going 4-6 from long range. She also pulled down 13 boards to complete her third double-double of the season.

The Lady Bulldogs started out slow, trailing 17-4 after four minutes of play. SWOSU ripped off 12 straight points to pull within one before SNU scored their first bucket in over three minutes of play. The Lady Dawgs would see the deficit grow again to as much as 11 points, but worked relentlessly to close the gap. They finally did with eight seconds left, courtesy of Chapman's second 3-pointer of the game, drawing level at 42-42 at the end of the half.

The Lady Dawgs scored eight of the first ten points in the second half to finally wrestle the lead away from SNU thanks to back-to-back makes from downtown by Chapman and a Jessica Penner jumper. The Crimson Storm looked to close the gap that had ballooned to as many as 11 points with 7:24 left in play and down just 67-64, but Morgan Vogt slammed the door shut with two straight from beyond the arc to trigger a 10-0 run by SWOSU to seal the game.

While Chapman led the way, three other players finished in double digit scoring. Chelsea Bates poured in 16 and Kimmi Sawatzky found her stroke again for 14 points. Vogt set a career high with 15 points, going 5-8 from the field and 4-6 from deep.

"I felt like we came out in the second half and played a lot better and started knocking down our shots," Head Coach Kelsi Musick said. "We executed the offense better, which is something we've really been working on in practice and it showed tonight because we got open looks and had players step up and put them in."

SWOSU picked up a crucial win to move to 3-8 in conference play as they complete a four-game road swing. They return to the friendly confines of the Pioneer Cellular Event Center this Saturday, January 31 for the Hall of Fame game against East Central at 1 PM.
