SWOSU Soccer Suffers Late Loss in 2OT Thriller

Box Score

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The SWOSU Lady Bulldogs struck first, but Oklahoma Baptist scored midway through the second half, and again in double overtime, to take the game. Cori Kelly scored for the Bulldogs, while Ailee Thompson and Mikayla Lowery both got on the score sheet for the Lady Bison.

The game started off well for SWOSU, as Kelly finally found the back of the net at the beginning of the first half. She was the most active shooter after four games for the Bulldogs with seven of a team-leading eight shots put on frame, and against OBU she found her breakthrough. The Bulldogs entered the locker rooms at the half leading for just the second time all season.

Halfway through the second half, in the 71st minute, OBU found the equalizer when Shelbie Shawn assisted Thompson. The two sides would go into overtime tied 1-1, where golden goal would determine the winner.

SWOSU outshot OBU 5-3 in the extra time periods. SWOSU was inches from taking the game with a minute and a half left in the first extra time period when Olivia Butler's shot ricocheted off the post. OBU found a little more luck when Marta Venegas found Lowery for the winner with 49 seconds left in the game.

The performance displayed by SWOSU was one of their most complete games of the season. Though they were outshot 21-16 by OBU, the 16 shots are a season high, as well as the nine shots on goal. Kelly now leads all Bulldogs with 3 points on the season after notching her first goal of the season. Courtney Flores recorded another seven saves in the losing effort, and is still on pace to finish in the top 10 for saves in a season.

Action resumes when the Bulldogs begin a three game home stand next week. They host West Texas A&M at the SWOSU Athletic Complex Tuesday at 3 PM.
