GOODWELL, Okla. – Trent Washington scored a game-high 19 points and
Martell Collins notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Bulldogs reached their season-high in scoring with an 86-62 victory over Panhandle State on Saturday afternoon.
SWOSU started the game by outscoring the Aggies 13-1 over the first eight minutes of the game and went on top 26-13 midway through the half and appeared in control. Panhandle State, however, went on a 13-0 run to tie the game at 26-26 with just over five minutes remaining in the half. SWOSU responded and closed the half on a 13-4 run to talk a 39-30 lead to the break.
That momentum carried over into the second half as the Bulldogs outscored OPSU 22-8 over the first eight minutes of the second half to go on top 61-38 and they would not look back.
Washington led the Bulldogs with 19 points and he was one of five players from SWOSU to reach double figures in scoring. Collins recorded his second double-double of the year with 18 points and 10 rebounds while
Kenyan Borders and
Ayo Ojo added 12 points apiece.
Richard McCalop chipped in a season-high 11 points and four rebounds in 20 minutes.
"We shot the ball really well today and I feel like this was a solid performance and a total team victory," SWOSU Coach
Bob Battisti said following the game. "That being said, we still have to keep progressing because we have some tough conference games coming up."
SWOSU finished with their best shooting performance of the season, hitting over 50% from the field (31-of-57) and three-point range (11-of-21) while knocking down 13-of-14 (92.9%) free throw attempts. They also held Panhandle State more than 23 points under their season average as they limited the Aggies to less than 35% shooting from the field.
The win improves the Bulldogs to 4-2 on the year and gives them their first streak of consecutive victories this season. SWOSU returns to action on Thursday as they travel to Ada for Great American Conference action at East Central.
