WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Lady Bulldogs fell to the Central Oklahoma Bronchos 74-54 on Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
It was a back and forth affair to begin the game, with SWOSU twice holding a four point lead. UCO cut the lead to one at the 16:02 mark before the two teams traded a one point lead twice each. A Haley Weathers layup for UCO gave the Bronchos a three point lead that they would not surrender the rest of the game. The teams went into the locker rooms with SWOSU looking at a 16 point deficit.
The second half was all UCO, as they opened the half on a 12-5 run over the first eight minutes of the game. The Lady Dawgs played much better defense in the second half, with UCO shooting 39.1 percent from the field after shooting 66.7 percent in the first half.
SWOSU faced a difficult time finding a rhythm, however, shooting just 27.5 percent from the floor, including 25.5 percent from deep. They also struggled to find a way to the line, taking a season low ten free throws. They did win the turnover battle however, forcing the Bronchos into 16 turnovers.
Kimmi Sawatzky finished with a team high 16 points on six made baskets, including four from beyond the arc. Jennifer Williams was second on the team with 12 points. Chelsea Bates finished with eight points and team-high numbers in assists (5) and rebounds (6).
"At the end of the day, I got a whole new team," said Head Coach Kelsi Musick, "None of these players have ever played together before and we've got to figure out how to jell. When you have a whole new team, it takes some time to figure out how to read each other, but we need to figure it out sooner rather than later."
SWOSU returns to action on Saturday, November 29 at 3:30 PM when they travel to Emporia, Kan. to take on No.7-ranked Emporia State.
