WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU won the first set, but were unable to hang on and knock off second-place Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday night, falling by a score of 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 23-25, 19-25) at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
Taylor VanderWerff had two kills as the Bulldogs finished with the final five points of the first set to take the opening lead after hitting .200 for the set. VanderWerff had four kills for the set while
Joey Collins and
Carly Zak had three apiece to get the Dawgs on top.
The defense of the Rangers stood out as they held down the SWOSU offense and came back for the win. Northwestern had 94 digs compared to 83 for SWOSU and 11 team blocks to eight for the Dawgs. The Rangers hit .143 for the match and above .100 in each set, a feat that the Bulldogs accomplished in just the first and fourth sets.
Zak led the Bulldogs with 15 kills while
Shayne Haley was next with 13, including six in the final set as SWOSU tried to rally.
Brandy Mader (24 assists, digs) and
Alyssa Olson (16 assists, 11 digs) both recorded double-doubles in the match while
Kenya Williams set a new career high and had team-high honors with 23 digs.
Kaila Lancaster added 14 digs and nine assists and
Kiley Brennfoerder had a team best five blocks (three solo, two assist).
The defeat is the fourth straight for the Bulldogs, who fall to 5-10 on the year and 3-5 in GAC play. SWOSU has a full week to regroup before hosting Southeastern Oklahoma State next Tuesday night at 7:00 pm in the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
