Box Score BETHANY, Okla. – The Bulldogs twice had the lead, but Southern Nazarene came out on top in a five goal affair.
Maya Hay opened her account for SWOSU, and
Charlotte Eastman scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Mallary Pineda, Hannah Robinson and Alyssa Glitzke scored for the Crimson Storm.
The Bulldogs struggled to get into the game in the first half, not taking a single shot through the first 45 minutes. SWOSU's goal was under siege most of the half, with the Crimson Storm registering ten shots. The backline of
Lauren Williams,
Randa Castleberry, Eastman and
Alyssa Bagley did well to withstand the pressure. Due to their solid defensive effort, none of SNU's shots threatened to find the back of the net.
Courtney Flores was never challenged as a result.
The best chance for SWOSU in the first half came almost immediately after Hay made her introduction in the game. She collected the ball at midfield and made a slicing run towards the heart of SNU's defense. She looked up and found
Jasmine Heffley making a trailing run in support. Hay tried to find Heffley with a through ball, but the defense was able to cut out the pass.
SWOSU began the second half much brighter. In the 52nd minute,
Olivia Butler whipped in an early cross from the left wing. Hay made a good diagonal run to beat her mark and was able to redirect the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to open her account. It was Butler's fourth assist of the campaign, a team best.
The Crimson Storm threatened to get back into the game in the 60th minute. Bekah Stewart collected a SWOSU clearance in the middle of the field and sent in a low, hard shot that looked destined for goal. Flores was equal to it however, dropping low and pushing it away from goal for a corner. The corner was successfully defended by the Bulldogs and the danger was averted.
SWOSU almost found their second goal of the match in the 64th minute.
Cori Kelly made a run and sent
Eva Rule through. Rule took a heavy touch, and keeper Natasha Fuentes collected it to ensure the Bulldogs didn't double their lead.
A handball in the box was called in the 70th minute on SWOSU. Pineda stepped up to the spot for the ensuing penalty kick. She sent a shot low that beat Flores and found the back of the net.
The Bulldogs answered immediately in the 72nd minute. A handball by Fuentes denied a clear goal scoring opportunity, but gave SWOSU a free kick just outside the 18 yard box. Eastman stepped up and sent in a hard shot just to the left of Fuentes that gave the lead back to the Bulldogs.
SNU responded just four minutes later when they were awarded a free kick 30 yards out from goal. Taylor Jester took the free kick, and Robinson rose highest. Her header looped over Flores and clipped the underside of the cross bar to bring the score back to even in the 76th minute.
SWOSU looked to have taken a point on the road, but SNU found the winning goal in the 88th minute. Glitzke found the ball in the box and sent in a curling shot into the left side of goal to give the Crimson Storm the lead for the first time. It would turn out to be the final goal of the game.
The loss drops SWOSU 2-9-2 on the season and 2-3-1 in conference play. They play again on Saturday against East Central in Ada, Okla., at 1 PM.
