ALVA, Okla. – While Sunday's rivalry match between SWOSU soccer and Northwestern Oklahoma State went to the intermission tied at 1-1, the Bulldogs pulled away with a trio of second half goals and the second-most shot attempts in school history to earn the 4-1 victory.
Jessica Carbonara got the Bulldogs on the board in the 15th minute but Northwestern would tie the match at 1-1 with a goal from Gabriella Hernandez in the 37th minute. SWOSU outshot the Rangers 15-4 in the half but still went to the break tied.
Things opened up for SWOSU in the second half.
Alexis Russell got the onslaught started with an unassisted goal in the 49th minute while Carbonara and
Kelsey Visor tacked on insurance goals in the 72nd and 79th minutes, respectively, both off assists from
Eva Rule.
The Bulldogs attempted 24 shots in the half and 39 for the match, marking just the fifth time in school history that a SWOSU team attempted 30 or more shots. Eleven players attempted at least one shot for SWOSU, led by
Charlotte Eastman, who's seven attempts were more than the entire Northwestern Oklahoma State team.
SWOSU's defensive effort was equally impressive, holding the Rangers to just five shot attempts and one goal.
Courtney Flores made three saves and earned her sixth win of the season in goal for the Bulldogs.
Next weekend, the Bulldogs return to the Athletic Complex to host Southern Nazarene and East Central in the second round of conference action.
