Steve Day enters his third season as a full-time coach on the SWOSU football coaching staff and his fifth year overall as a coach for the Bulldogs. He serves as the Pass Game Coordinator for SWOSU while working with the Bulldog quarterbacks.
Â
Day joined the coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 2010 and worked two years in that role following his standout playing career for SWOSU. He then spent the spring of 2012 coaching at Highland (Kan.) Community College before returning to his alma mater in his current position.
Â
Since graduating, Day has guided one of the best quarterbacks to ever wear a Bulldog uniform and overseen an improvement in the balance and production of the SWOSU offense. Under Day’s tutelage, Dustin Stenta became the Bulldogs all-time leading passer and broke numerous passing records, most previously held by Day himself. Stenta capped off his career with a record-breaking senior season in 2013, becoming the first quarterback in SWOSU history to throw for over 3,000 yards in a season.
Â
Stenta finished the 2013 season with single-season records of 3,003 yards and 27 touchdowns through the air, helping the Bulldogs produce the fourth-best passing offense in the Great American Conference. Stenta was the third-leading passer in the conference and earned Second Team All-GAC honors.
Â
Day himself was a record-setting quarterback at SWOSU, guiding the Bulldogs offense over the course of five years from 2005-09 despite missing the 2006 season due to a shoulder injury. At the conclusion of his playing career, Day held the SWOSU career passing records in a number of categories, including completions (692), attempts (1,334), yards (7,482) and touchdowns (46).
Â
A native of Edmond, Okla., Day holds two degrees from SWOSU and he was twice named the Lone Star Conference North Division Academic Player of the Year. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science in 2010 before completing his master’s degree in Sports Management in 2012. Prior to coming to SWOSU, Day played for Bulldog head coach Dan Cocannouer at Santa Fe High School where he was a member of the Class 6A state runner-up team in 2003.
