RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – SWOSU Football drove the length of the field in the final two minutes and reached the Arkansas Tech 5-yard line with a chance to win, but the Bulldogs came up just short in a 26-20 loss in Thursday night's season opener.
It was another instant classic in a series that has produced its share of down-to-the-wire finishes in recent years.
Trailing by six with 1:56 remaining, SWOSU marched 70 yards in 13 plays before getting three shots at the end zone from the Tech 5. All three fell incomplete, allowing the Wonder Boys to escape another thriller between the two programs.
SWOSU controlled much of the opening quarter and struck first when
Keith Rockwell finished a 75-yard opening drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. The Bulldog defense forced a pair of fumbles in the first half, including one deep in SWOSU territory, while special teams also came through after Tech scored on the final play of the first quarter.
Jaylen Niedo blocked the ensuing PAT to preserve a 7-6 lead.
Ethan McBee stretched the advantage to 10-6 with a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter before Tech finally moved in front on a 51-yard touchdown pass with 1:55 remaining in the half. SWOSU immediately threatened to answer, moving from its own 25 to the Tech 23 before an interception ended the scoring opportunity. The turnover didn't cost the Dawgs any additional points, however, as
Wyatt Rohmer picked off Tech on the very next play to send the game to halftime at 13-10.
Neither offense found the end zone in the third quarter, but SWOSU continued to stay within striking distance. McBee connected from 41 yards with 1:43 remaining in the period to pull the Bulldogs even at 13-13 and set up a back-and-forth finish.
Tech capitalized on an interception early in the fourth to regain the lead, but SWOSU had an answer. With
Knox Dyson and
Charles Mutter continuing to rotate at quarterback, the Bulldogs put together a 13-play march that chewed nearly six minutes off the clock. Mutter finished it himself from four yards out, pulling SWOSU even again at 20-20 with 6:22 to play.
The Wonder Boys answered with the go-ahead touchdown inside the final two minutes, but a missed PAT kept the margin at six and gave SWOSU a chance to win it with one final drive.
SWOSU finished with a 447-300 advantage in total offense and held a 28-16 edge in first downs. Dyson completed 29-of-43 passes for 257 yards, with
DeAndre Beasley hauling in 12 passes for a game-high 131 yards. Dyson was intercepted three times, including twice on drives that reached Tech territory.
Mutter completed all three of his passes while adding 40 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Rockwell led the Bulldog rushing attack with 70 yards and SWOSU's other touchdown on 10 carries.
The Bulldog defense matched Tech's three takeaways with three of its own and recorded four sacks.
Keshaun Jackson had two sacks and recovered a fumble, while
CJ McKinney added another recovery and Rohmer supplied the interception.
Malcom Gooden and
Madox Sekyere tied for the team lead with nine tackles apiece, with Gooden forcing a fumble and Sekyere adding a sack.
SWOSU (0-1) returns home Thursday, Sept. 10 for a second consecutive Thursday night matchup, hosting No. 2-ranked and defending national runner-up Harding in its 2026 home opener. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
