WEATHERFORD – Henderson State plated five runs in the eighth inning, a difference maker in Friday's 13-9 loss to the Reddies.
The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Bulldogs.
SWOSU weathered an early 5-0 deficit and eventually tied the game in the fifth, but Henderson State scored eight runs across the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to pull away. The Bulldogs answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth but could not overcome the deficit.
Henderson State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on four hits, then added an RBI double in the second against starting pitcher
Josh Doelitsch. He would settle in from there, keeping the Reddies off the board until the sixth.
With Doelitsch finding a rhythm, the Bulldogs' offense responded. With two outs in the fourth, SWOSU collected four hits to score four runs. Back-to-back doubles from
Chris Clark and
John Spoto drove in two runs, and
Landon Meyer capped the inning with a two-run home run.
Trailing 5-4, SWOSU tied the game in the fifth after loading the bases.
Henderson State regained the lead in the sixth after two leadoff walks set the table. A two-out, two-run home run in the seventh extended the advantage before the Reddies broke the game open with five runs in the eighth.
Doelitsch (3-3) took the loss, striking out nine while issuing seven walks.
Conner Watson recorded the final out of the seventh before a difficult eighth inning.
Will David pitched a scoreless ninth, walking two.
At the plate, both teams finished with 13 hits. Spoto led SWOSU, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
