WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball fell to USAO in a midweek matchup in Weatherford, 14-11, after a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning broke a 10-10 tie.
SWOSU has now dropped below .500 for the first time since the opening weekend and sits at 15-16 on the year while being 7-11 in conference play. They will look to regroup for a weekend series with East Central, starting Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Ada.
The story of the game was big scoring innings, as five of the six scoring frames featured at least four runs. The lone inning with just one run scored came during the Bulldogs' final push in the bottom of the ninth.
The Drovers started the scoring with six runs in the top of the second, five of which came with two outs. That has been a common theme throughout the Dawgs' season, with opponents finding ways to score after being down to their final out. SWOSU returned the favor in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs with two outs without recording a hit, as all baserunners reached through free passes, wild pitches, and errors.
The teams traded big innings in both the fourth and seventh, tying the game at 10-10 entering the ninth. After a double to open the frame for USAO, the Drovers loaded the bases with a sac bunt and a walk. Henry Garcia then sent a towering ball over the scoreboard for a grand slam, effectively ending the Dawgs' chances at a midweek victory. SWOSU added one run in the bottom half but ultimately fell short, 14-11.
Eight of the nine Bulldog starters recorded hits on the afternoon, with
Kotaro Wakui,
Nolan McCrossin,
Keaton Fisher, and
Caden Hunter each collecting two.
Six different arms saw action for SWOSU.
Kael Shelite had his longest outing of the season, going 4.1 innings while allowing just two hits and no walks and striking out five.
