MAGNOLIA, Ark – SWOSU Softball knocked off No. 7 Southern Arkansas in extra innings in Friday's opener before falling 4-3 in game two to split the day.
The series will be decided Saturday at noon.
Game One (8 inn.)
SWOSU 4, SAU 3
SWOSU was no-hit through five innings before rallying late to stun the nationally ranked Muleriders.
Blaire Gentry kept SAU off the board early, matching zeros despite limited offensive support.
The Bulldogs broke through in the sixth.
Landry Bayless reached on an error before
Sierra Woods delivered SWOSU's first hit. After advancing both runners,
Maddie Rahon came through with a two-out, two-RBI single to give SWOSU a 2-0 lead.
Southern Arkansas answered immediately. An error sparked the inning before a two-out triple tied the game, followed by a go-ahead run to make it 3-2.
Down to its final three outs, SWOSU responded.
Riley Lusk led off the seventh with a double, and Woods tied the game with a two-out RBI single. The Bulldogs loaded the bases but left them stranded.
In extras, Lusk doubled again to move
Skyla McPhillips — who reached on an error — into scoring position.
Kennedi Caine delivered the go-ahead RBI single with two outs.
Gentry returned to record the final out with the bases loaded, earning the save.
Lily Barfield (W) picked up the win with 1.2 innings in relief.
SWOSU finished with seven hits after being no-hit into the sixth. SAU totaled 11.
Emma Duncan (13-1) suffered her first loss of the season as the Muleriders dropped just their third game of the year.
Game Two
SAU 4, SWOSU 3
SWOSU rallied from a three-run deficit but came up just short in the nightcap.
Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, the Bulldogs scored three runs to tie the game.
Taylor McMahon drove in the first run before
Riley Lusk added a two-out, two-RBI single.
SAU answered in the bottom half with the eventual game-winning run and held on the rest of the way.
SWOSU outhit SAU 8-7, but a two-run home run proved to be the difference.
Jaycee McKee (L) took the loss in relief.
Alexis Taylor started and allowed three runs on four hits over four innings, striking out two and walking two.
