WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Softball secured its first conference victory of the season Friday, sweeping a doubleheader against Arkansas-Monticello.
The Dawgs received strong pitching throughout the day and paired it with timely offense to secure both wins. SWOSU will look to complete the series sweep Saturday at noon.
Game One
SWOSU 6, UAM 0
The offense provided an early cushion with a five-run second inning as
Alexis Taylor cruised to a complete-game shutout in the circle.
Taylor struck out a career-high 13 batters and walked just one. She carried a one-hitter through six innings before UAM collected three hits in its final at-bat to finish with four.
Emily Wedel delivered the big blow in the second inning, tripling home three runs.
Maddie Rahon followed with an RBI single. The rally began when
Taylor McMahon singled with one out before UAM committed an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Wedel, who cleared them with the triple.
Josie Oakley added an insurance run with an RBI single in the sixth.
SWOSU outhit the Blossoms 11-4. Rahon finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while McMahon and
Sierra Woods each added two hits and combined to score three runs.
Game Two
SWOSU 3, UAM 2
SWOSU trailed through the early and middle innings of the second game after the Blossoms scored an unearned run in the second and added another in the fifth.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs mounted their comeback in an inning sparked by defensive miscues from UAM. Two errors allowed SWOSU's first run to score before
Josie Oakley tied the game with an RBI single.
Maddie Rahon scored on the play after reaching earlier on a single and advancing to third on an outfield error.
One inning later,
Landry Bayless delivered a triple that set up the go-ahead run, which scored shortly after on a
Sierra Woods single.
Alexis Taylor entered in the seventh to earn her first save of the season.
Blaire Gentry started and pitched four innings before
Jaycee McKee (W, 2-4) took over in the fifth.
SWOSU again outhit UAM, this time 9-6.
Skyla McPhillips went 2-for-3 with a double, while Rahon and Oakley each added two hits.
