MONTICELLO, Ark. – SWOSU Baseball was winless in two tries Friday against Arkansas-Monticello, falling to the Boll Weevils 11-8 and 9-3. UAM plated nine runs across two innings to rally in game one before an eight-run first inning in the nightcap put the Dawgs in an early hole they could not escape.
SWOSU will look to salvage the series and avoid the sweep Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Game One
UAM 11, SWOSU 8
SWOSU built a 6-1 lead after its at-bat in the sixth inning before Arkansas-Monticello erased the margin with a four-run sixth and a six-run seventh.
Starter
Josh Doelitsch ran out of gas in the sixth after five strong innings. Having allowed just one run through the first five frames, the Weevil offense finally broke through in the sixth, chasing him from the game and continuing the damage against the Bulldog bullpen.
With SWOSU still holding a 7-5 lead entering the seventh, UAM strung together seven hits and plated six runs to grab the lead for good.
The Dawgs were outhit 15-12 in the contest, with 11 of UAM's hits coming during the decisive two-inning stretch.
Zach Makarewich led the SWOSU lineup with three hits.
Landon Meyer and
Nolan McCrossin each doubled and homered to help build the early Bulldog advantage.
Game Two
UAM 9, SWOSU 3
A nightmare opening inning proved to be the difference in the second game.
Arkansas-Monticello took advantage of four walks and four hits in the first inning to push across eight runs and seize control early.
Aidan Wagley entered from the bullpen and provided stability, tossing five innings in relief. He struck out 10 and walked four, allowing just one additional run in his first inning of work before holding the Weevils scoreless the rest of the way.
Despite the final score, both teams finished with six hits.
