Lady Bulldogs Find a Way in Shawnee

SHAWNEE, Okla. – SWOSU Women's Basketball survived a low-scoring nail-biter in Shawnee, sweeping the season series against the Bison with a 56-51 win.

SWOSU shot just 9-31 (29 percent) in the first half, while Oklahoma Baptist finished 10-24 (41.7 percent) from the field. Both teams made three three-pointers in the opening half. There were seven ties and five lead changes, and Landry Allen found herself in foul trouble with three fouls in the final three minutes before halftime, as OBU took a one point lead into the break.

After the Lady Dawgs found themselves trailing 39-34 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter, a critical 12-0 run shifted the momentum. The surge featured four turnovers on five possessions by Oklahoma Baptist, along with back-to-back three-pointers from former Bison Peyton Conde, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to find their rhythm and take a 46-41 lead into the final frame.

Five minutes into the final frame, the score was tied at 48 with the crowd firmly behind the Green and Gold. The Lady Dawgs, however, shut the door on the home team with an 8-3 run to close out the game, highlighted by two immensely clutch free throws from Elle Papahronis, who finished a perfect 6-6 from the line.

SWOSU shot just 27.7 percent from the field (18-65), the third lowest mark of the season and the lowest in a Lady Bulldog win. Oklahoma Baptist shot 40 percent from the field and also made 18 shots, but had 20 fewer attempts, largely due to an 18-6 advantage for the Lady Dawgs on the offensive boards and an 18-10 edge in turnovers forced. SWOSU also held an 18-6 advantage in points off turnovers.

Papahronis led the Lady Dawgs with 15 points on 4-19 shooting. Her free throws proved decisive, as her six makes without a miss marked her most made free throws in a game this season. She also pulled down nine rebounds. After going without a block for the first time this season against SNU on Saturday, Landry Allen responded with four blocks, three steals, and 13 points.

In her return to Oklahoma Baptist, Peyton Conde scored 14 points, knocked down three three-pointers, and grabbed nine rebounds. Conde and Papahronis each added three steals.

SWOSU (10-13, 8-10 GAC) returns home to Weatherford with two strong opportunities to pick up wins this weekend, first hosting Arkansas-Monticello on Thursday night in hopes of avenging an earlier loss, before welcoming Southern Arkansas on Saturday.
