WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Soccer battled league-leading Harding to a scoreless draw Thursday afternoon in a physical matchup between two of the top teams in the Great American Conference standings.
The Bulldogs entered the day just two points behind the Lady Bisons and played on the front foot for much of the contest, particularly during a second half in which they produced 13 shots and repeatedly pressured the Harding defense.
SWOSU finished with a 15-11 advantage in total shots while both sides placed five attempts on goal. The physical play resulted in 20 combined fouls and one yellow card issued to each team.
Harding generated the first sustained threat of the afternoon with three shots over a five-minute stretch midway through the opening half.
Lelu Lamb stopped both attempts that reached the frame to keep the match scoreless.
Late in the first half,
Kayla Abbott played a well-placed long ball ahead to
Madelyn Kitchen, but Harding's goalkeeper raced off her line to break up the opportunity. Moments later,
Brekyn Cope put SWOSU's first shot on goal in the 43rd minute, but her attempt was saved to send the match into halftime scoreless.
The Bulldogs immediately became the aggressor after the break.
Kinsey Geasland fired an attempt just over a minute into the half before
Saoirse Hourigan and
Sarahi Delgadillo each forced saves during the opening 11 minutes.
Harding mounted its strongest second-half push between the 69th and 74th minutes, producing five shots and forcing Lamb into two saves. SWOSU answered with another wave of pressure, earning four corner kicks and taking five shots over the next nine minutes.
Maya Thornburg and
Braelee Epp each placed attempts on target during the stretch, but neither side found the breakthrough.
Geasland led all players with five shots, while Hourigan added four. Lamb finished with five saves to secure the shutout.
The Bulldogs remain home Saturday for Senior Day and another important matchup in the GAC standings against Ouachita, which sits directly ahead of SWOSU in the conference table. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
