Offense Stays Hot in Home Win over MSSU

WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Soccer stayed unbeaten and moved to 4-0 on the season after a 5-3 victory over Missouri Southern on Sunday afternoon at the Athletic Complex.

Junior Raniya Cattina netted the game-winner in the 80th minute, halting Missouri Southern's second-half rally that had erased a 3-1 Bulldog lead. Just a minute later, Saoirse Hourigan converted a penalty kick to seal the result.

Hourigan scored twice in the match, bringing her season total to a team-leading four goals. She also opened the scoring in the 6th minute off an assist from Philippine De Sancy.

The Lions equalized in the 34th minute, but Brekyn Cope answered before halftime, redirecting a De Sancy corner into the net for her first goal of the season and a 2-1 lead.

Early in the second half, Kayla Abbott tallied her first of the year in the 51st minute, assisted by Ashlyn Stigall, stretching the lead to 3-1. Missouri Southern responded with two quick goals in less than five minutes to tie the match at 3-3, but Cattina's strike—her first of the season—flipped momentum back to SWOSU before Hourigan's penalty kick sealed the win.

The Bulldogs generated 24 shots with 12 on target, while MSSU finished with 15 shots, seven on goal. Emma Young collected four saves in net for SWOSU.

The Bulldogs' five goals marked the second straight match reaching that mark, their first back-to-back five-goal performances since 2018. Through four matches, SWOSU has already scored 13 goals—just two shy of their entire 2024 season total (15).

Next up for SWOSU is a road swing against two MIAA opponents. The Dawgs visit Pitt State on Thursday, Sept. 18, before closing non-conference play on Sunday at Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
