First Half 50 Burger Secures SWOSU a Rivalry Win

WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Women's Basketball scored a season high 50 points in the first half against Northwestern and went on to cruise to a 78-61 win over the Lady Rangers on Thursday night inside the Pioneer Event Center.

It's the Lady Bulldogs third straight win in a current four-game home stand. They move to 13-10 overall and 9-8 in the GAC and will wrap up their extended stay in Weatherford on Saturday (Feb. 15) when Southeastern Oklahoma State visits town for a 1:00 pm matchup.

The tone was set from the jump on Thursday. SWOSU opened the game on a 10-0 run, forcing 10 turnovers and knocking down five three pointers to lead 29-8 after the first quarter. Layni Zinn headed that offensive explosion with 11 points in the first quarter. She finished with 20 in the first half on 6-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.

An additional pair of three balls from Hailey Grant and Mason Jones had SWOSU with 10 total by the end of the first half and they led Northwestern 50-25 at the break. It's the most points in a half the Lady Bulldogs have scored all year. They were 10-for-15 from deep and shot nearly 60% overall from the field through the first 20 minutes of the game.

The Rangers outscored SWOSU in the third quarter 21-13 before the two sides played to a stalemate in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs did not allow a three-pointer to Northwestern in the second half, all but guaranteeing there'd be no Northwestern comeback.

Layni Zinn finished with 24 in the game after she became a focal point to stop after halftime. It's a new career scoring high her the senior, which she had by the halfway point. Grant ended with 19 – tying her career high. Averi Zinn led the team with seven assists and five rebounds, while chipping in 13 points. Mason Jones had 10 points, all which came during the first half offensive explosion.

SWOSU's 13 three-point makes in the game ties a season best for them. They ended 13-for-27 (48%) from beyond the arc.

Points off turnovers were a difference maker. The Dawgs won that battle 35-8 with 26 of those coming in the first half.
