Dawgs Get Back on Track with Series Sweep of Southern Nazarene

WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Baseball collected another pair of wins over Southern Nazarene on Saturday, earning the second conference sweep of the season. The Bulldogs overpowered SNU in the first game of the day before getting a complete game shutout from Jackson Phillips in the series finale.

The wins push SWOSU to 18-16 on the year and 10-11 in league play. They'll head to Chickasha on Tuesday looking for revenge against USAO in a non-conference matchup before facing Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee next weekend.

Game One – SWOSU 11, SNU 3

Seven runs in the game's first two innings gave the Dawgs a cushion from the onset. SNU put up scoring innings in the fifth and sixth but that damage was limited.

Of SWOSU's 10 hits, five went for extra bases including a pair of doubles from Geoff Marlow in the early innings. Marlow finished with four RBI and scored another run himself.

Marlow doubled in the game's first two runs in the first inning. Leading 2-0, free bases on walks and hit by pitches put base runners on in the second inning before Marlow plated two more with another double. Reece Burke doubled right after him, followed by Joseph Frisby's single which capped off a five-run second.

After the Crimson Storm chipped into the deficit, Marco Barrera doubled in two more runs in the seventh to put the game to rest. Connor Jeffers added SWOSU's final run in the eighth with an RBI single.

Josh Fluet (W, 2-1) got the start and pitched into the sixth before being relieved. He allowed three runs, all unearned, struck out one and scattered four hits in his win. Grant Ewy and Tyler Fortin both did not allow runs in their relief appearances. Ewy struck out five in 2.1 innings of work. Fortin induced a double play to end the game in the ninth.

Game Two – SWOSU 4, SNU 0

Jackson Phillips (W, 6-1) threw a complete game shutout, which allowed the offense to find its footing dealing with the Storm's left-handed starter.

The offense finally broke through in the fourth with two runs. Three straight singles plated SWOSU's first run with hits from Jackson Syring, Geoff Marlow, and Joseph Frisby. An error allowed the second run of the inning to cross shortly thereafter.

Two more runs were added as insurance in the sixth. Cambell Sullivan, pinch running for Marlow, stole second and got to third thanks to an errant throw from the catcher. Conner Jeffers did his job to score Sullivan from third, followed by an Eric Foufoulas single that allowed the fourth (and final) run to cross.

Frisby, playing in left field, finished 2-for-2 in the game with a run scored, an RBI, and a pair of stolen bases.

It was the second complete game shutout for Phillips in conference play this season. His final line: two hits, six strikeouts, and no walks.
