Bulldogs, Jets Split Midweek Affair

WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Softball split Tuesday's midweek non-conference action with Newman, winning the first game 7-2 before falling 9-4 in game two. The Bulldogs led 4-0 entering the sixth inning in the final game before the Jets scored nine unanswered runs in the final two frames to win it handily.

The win Tuesday snapped SWOSU's six game losing streak heading into a home weekend conference series with Arkansas Tech.

Game One – SWOSU 7, Newman 2

SWOSU put up a three spot in the first inning and scored single runs in each of the next four frames to provide Blaire Gentry the necessary run support.

Three hitters had perfect games at the plate – Shallen Mershon (3-3), Katie Boline (3-3), and Chesnie Hewitt (2-2). Mershon ended a triple shy of the cycle and drove in four runs. Boline's first inning double began the day's scoring for the Dawgs. Hewitt homered in the second inning.

After Newman scored runs in the first and second inning, Gentry (W, 7-8) settled in and threw five consecutive scoreless innings to close out the game. She allowed just three hits but walked four in the complete game effort.

The offense combined for 12 hits.

Game Two – Newman 9, SWOSU 4

Things unraveled from the sixth inning on after Newman, who had six hits through the first five innings, added another 10 between the sixth and seventh to steal game two in come-from-behind fashion.

With SWOSU clinging to a 4-2 lead in the sixth with two outs, a ball to right field was not tracked down and allowed the tying run to score. A batter later, an error at second pushed the go-ahead run across.

The Jets scored another four runs in the seventh to provide cushion and seal the deal.

Courtney Hill (L, 2-7) was replaced in the seventh inning by Lauren Bratcher who collected the game's final two outs.

SWOSU scored the game's first four runs and enjoyed the lead through the middle innings. Rebeca Fajardo drove in the final two runs in the second inning with a two-run home run to center field. Riley Lusk (single) and Cierah Jones (sac fly) drove in runs prior to that.

Katie Boline and Jadyn Hook both had two hits to lead the lineup.
