WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Baseball scored crooked numbers in three separate innings and got solid outings on the mound from Jackson Phillips and Josh Rains in an 11-3 victory over Missouri Western on Saturday in the day's first game.
The win knotted the four-game series up 1-1 in response to the Griffon's 6-2 victory on Friday.
Phillips (W, 1-0) got the start and threw 5.0 innings to earn the win. He exited with a 7-2 lead after scattering five hits and striking out two. He managed to navigate a bases loaded, no out jam in the third inning by allowing just a single run in the frame and put up two more zeros in the ensuing innings to wrap up his outing.
Rains earned the unique save by throwing the final 4.0 innings effectively. He struck out eight, walked two and gave up just three hits.
Offensively, SWOSU scored in every inning but two and got doubles from four separate players: Geoff Marlow, Jackson Syring, Markus Coronado, and Sean Monsour. Syring (2-2) and Coronado (1-4) both drove in three runs in the contest.
SWOSU scored single runs in the first two innings but was matched by the visitors who tied the game in the third inning after loading the bases on Phillips. From there, the Dawgs scored the next five runs in the third and fourth innings to break the game open headed by Syring who drove in three of those five during the spurt.
Three more runs in the sixth inning all but sealed the game. Coronado doubled to left center to get SWOSU into double digit run production.
Missouri Western used six pitchers in the game and all allowed at least one run.
In the second game of the day, the teams ran out of daylight and will resume action tomorrow (Sunday) at noon. The Bulldogs trail 11-8 with one inning to play. Upon completion of the game, the teams will roll immediately into the series finale (game 4) which was originally scheduled for 12pm.
