Second Quarter Surge Not Enough in Loss to Bison

SHAWNEE, Okla. – SWOSU Football erased an early 14-0 deficit with a pair of second quarter scores but ultimately fell 35-17 to Oklahoma Baptist after being held scoreless in the second half on Saturday night in Shawnee.

The Bulldogs fought back with a 46-yard touchdown pass from Kai Kunz to Jax Smith and a timely scoop and score by Austin Houk on special teams but could not produce another touchdown the rest of the way. Ethan McBee capped off SWOSU's 17-point second quarter with a field goal with 2:06 left to play before halftime.

McBee's field goal came just after a gashing 73-yard run from Kunz. A sprinting OBU defender caught Kunz from behind to save a touchdown and OBU was able to keep the Dawgs out of the end zone and preserve their lead at 21-17.

A 58-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the next drive put the Bison up 28-17 at the half.

OBU capped off the night's scoring with a touchdown pass early in the third quarter one play after blocking a SWOSU punt.

The Bulldogs totaled 190 yards of offense in the first half but were limited to just 89 yards after halftime. That trend matched the Bison, who tallied 283 yards before the break before SWOSU's defense held them to just 53 yards in the second half highlighted by a Logan Monroe interception and a Mason Daugherty fumble recovery.

Kunz finished 14-of-24 through the air for 115 yards and one touchdown and an interception and added 82 yards on the ground. Dante Dean had 14 touches for 50 yards. Smith caught two balls for 54 yards, Elijah Reed had 10 catches for 35 yards.

Keshaun Jackson led the defense with 14 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Monroe too had double digit tackles with 11.

SWOSU finished just 2-of-15 on third down and was 0-for-3 on fourth down.

The result drops the Dawgs to 2-5 on the season and concludes a two-game road swing. They'll return home next Saturday, October 26 for a Homecoming matchup against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
