MONTICELLO, Ark. – SWOSU Softball finished out their road play this year with a single game against Arkansas-Monticello. The Blossoms defeated the Bulldogs 4-2.
This was the last road game of the year for the Dawgs. They have one more series left in the season. It is next weekend against Henderson State at the SWOSU Athletic Complex. It starts on Friday with a 4:00 pm game.
For the third time in the series, SWOSU scored the first run of the game. UAM mistakes caused the score.
Cierah Jones was hit by a pitch to reach base. She advanced to second on a passed ball. Finally, she scored from second base on an error by the Blossoms.
SWOSU did a good job of keeping the game close in the early stages. Arkansas-Monticello had runners in scoring position in all of the first four innings, but the Bulldogs kept them off the scoreboard through this period.
The fifth inning was where UAM struck. Two singles put runners on first and third to kick the inning off. A sacrifice fly scored the runner on third to tie the game up at one apiece. The next batter blasted a two-run home run to right center and gave UAM their first lead of the game at 3-1. An insurance run in the bottom of the sixth extended this lead to 4-1.
SWOSU had one last chance in the top of the seventh. A leadoff walk and a stolen base put a runner on second with no outs. A throwing error in the field brought the base runner home to make the score 4-2. This run was all SWOSU produced as two straight groundouts ended the game.
Kaylee Barkley got the start in the circle and received the loss after going 5.0 innings.
